Hughes Bookmarks Extension - Privacy Policy

1. Overview

This privacy policy applies specifically to the Hughes Bookmarks browser extension ("the Extension"). The Extension allows users to save bookmarks directly to their Hughes account with one click.

Single Purpose: The Hughes Bookmarks extension exists solely to help users save and organize web bookmarks to their Hughes account.

2. Data We Collect

The Extension collects only the minimum data necessary to save bookmarks:

• Page URL: The URL of the page you choose to save
• Page Title: The title of the page you choose to save
• Page Description: Meta description from the page (if available)
• User-provided Keywords: Optional tags you add when saving
• Authentication Token: Stored locally to keep you signed in

We do NOT collect: browsing history, personal information, cookies from other sites, keystrokes, form data, or any data from pages you don't explicitly save.

3. Permission Justifications

The Extension requires the following permissions, each essential to its bookmark-saving functionality:

• activeTab: Accesses the current tab's URL and title ONLY when you click the extension icon or use the context menu to save a bookmark. We cannot and do not access tabs you haven't explicitly chosen to save.
• alarms: Schedules background sync for bookmarks saved while offline. When your connection is restored, queued bookmarks are automatically synced to your account.
• contextMenus: Creates a "Save to Hughes" option in the right-click context menu, providing a convenient alternative method to save bookmarks from any webpage or link.
• host_permissions (gethughes.io): Required to communicate with Hughes API servers to save bookmarks, retrieve your layouts, and sync offline bookmarks. Also used to capture your authentication token when you sign in on the Hughes website.
• notifications: Displays brief confirmation notifications when a bookmark is saved or when an error occurs. Notifications can be disabled in extension settings. We never use notifications for marketing.
• storage: Stores your preferences (default layout, notification settings), authentication token, and queued bookmarks for offline support locally in Chrome's secure storage. Data remains on your device.

4. How We Use Your Data

Data collected by the Extension is used exclusively to:

• Save bookmarks to your Hughes account
• Display your layouts for bookmark organization
• Queue bookmarks when offline and sync when connection is restored
• Remember your preferences (default layout, notification settings)

We do NOT use your data for advertising, analytics, or any purpose unrelated to bookmark saving.

5. Data Storage & Security

• Local Storage: Authentication tokens and preferences are stored locally in Chrome's secure storage API
• Server Storage: Saved bookmarks are transmitted securely (HTTPS) to Hughes servers hosted on Supabase
• Encryption: All data transmission uses TLS encryption
• No Third-Party Sharing: We never sell or share your data with third parties

6. Remote Code Policy

The Hughes Bookmarks extension does NOT use any remote code. All extension functionality is contained within the extension package downloaded from the Chrome Web Store. The extension only makes API calls to Hughes servers to save and retrieve bookmark data—no executable code is ever downloaded or executed remotely.

7. Data Usage Compliance

We certify that the Hughes Bookmarks extension complies with the Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies:

• We only collect data necessary for the extension's core bookmark-saving functionality
• We do not sell user data to third parties
• We do not use data for purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose
• We do not use data for creditworthiness or lending purposes
• We do not use data for personalized advertising

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

• Access: View all bookmarks saved to your Hughes account
• Delete: Remove any or all bookmarks from your account
• Export: Download your bookmark data
• Revoke Access: Sign out of the extension or uninstall it at any time
